Stakeholders have been urged to take position especially in protection of donkeys with calls for those not registered in animal protection to get registered to ensure smooth regulations of the industry and help tackling of animal welfare issues and carrying out of proper public awareness on the rights of animals.
Speaking during the meeting held at a Nairobi hotel the permanent secretary state department of livestock represented by Dr Joshua chepchieng secretary administration state department of livestock development has called on registration of all dogs and county government to ensure animal welfare at county government levels and Carry out awareness campaigns to farmers and public.
The meeting also addressed development of Kenya veterinary public health bill,slow legislation process, poor enforcement of animal welfare rights and lack of implementation budget as major challenges.
Bush slaughter for meat and trade in illegally sourced skins for export has threatened the donkey population which has reduced drastically in the recent past.However the donkey meat trade was banned in the year twenty twenty and was estimated to have generated 1.82 billion with a single donkey generating atleast 11,390 per month for the communities which rely on donkey for commercial purposes according to Brooke East Africa.
In a joint statement read by Dr Onyango,the stakeholders have called on fast tracking of animal protection bill and it's adoption to ensure public health issues are addressed,emerging trends like climate change having major effects on animals need to be resolved and policies put in place to protect animals.
